SSL certificates for your website provide two functions, encryption and validation.
Encryption ensures that the connection between your Web server and the client computer is secure. I will talk about encryption and another that knowledge base article.
The validation part of an SSL certificate verifies that you are who you claim to be and builds trust in your online presence. The issuing certificate authority (CA) performs these verification steps. There are three types of verification, Domain (DV), Organization (OV) and extended (EV).
Domain Verification
With domain verification SSL certificates, the issuing certificate authority verifies that you are the administrative manager of a domain name. The issuance of these certificates can take up to 24 hours, but some are instant. These certificates are ideal for informational websites and blogs. Shop Domain Verification Certificates.
Organization Verification
There are two verifications for organizational verification SSL certificates. The first part verifies that you are the administrative manager of the domain name. The second part confirms the legal existence of your organization. Most certificate authorities (CA) use Dun & Bradstreet business credit reporting to verify the legal existence of an organization. It’s important to check that Dun & Bradstreet have the correct information for your company before applying for this type of certificate. I recommend using this kind of certificate on company websites that do not sell products online. Shop Organization Verification Certificates.
Extended Verification
As with organization verification, the certificate authority confirms that you are the administrative manager of the domain name and the legal existence of your organization. The main difference is in proving the legal existence of your organization or company. The checks are done manually by a human and copies of documentation proving the legal existence of the organization or business are required. For example a certificate of incorporation. When the installation of a valid certificate on a Web server is complete, the user will see a bright green address bar with the legal company name before the domain name. Extended verification certificates are intended for e-commerce websites where credit card data is collected, and PCI compliance is required. Shop Extended Verification Certificates.
